Dr Gladys West

 Black Inventors in Technology 

Dr Gladys West helped invent the GPS technology. She was born on Dr. Gladys West didn't want to end up like her parents picking cotton, Tabacco and corn, so she decided to get an education. She worked hard in high school, and she received a scholarship to Virginia State University. Dr Gladys West graduated from college at the top of her class. Gladys began working at Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division. She began to collect data from satellites, leading to the development of the Global Positioning System. She was only the 2nd black woman to work at her job and she never received credit for her contribution until she was older. In 2018, Dr Gladys was inducted into the Air Force Space and Missel Pioneers by the US Air Force when she was 91 years old.
