Garret Morgan

 Black Inventors in Technology

Garret Morgan invented the modern traffic light and the gas mask. He was born on March 4, 1877. Garrett Morgan faced racial discrimination, but he didn't let that slow him down. His parents were slaved who were freed before Garret Morgan was born. He was inspired to invent an improvement to traffic signals, after witnessing a collision between a horse carriage and an automobile. He only had a 6-grade education, so he hired a tutor and started working as a handy man, fixing sewing machines.

Today, Tech companies should start hiring more minorities to combat racial bias in computing and technology, so minorities can get the same opportunities.

She worked hard in high school, and she received a scholarship to Virginia State University. Dr Gladys West graduated from college at the top of her class. Gladys began working at Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division. She began to collect data from satellites, leading to the development of the Global Positioning System. She was only the 2nd black woman to work at her job and she never received credit for her contribution until she was older. In 2018, Dr Gladys was inducted into the Air Force Space and Missel Pioneers by the US Air Force when she was 91 years old. Minorities who are underrepresented often leave their technology jobs because of unfairness.
